Last Active Service WWI Vet Passes Away
Thursday, August 06, 2009
Some of you know my interest in World War I history. The modernist writers and war poets such as Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon shaped a good deal of my writing skills, especially during my college years.

So it is of note that the last active World War I vet has passed away at 111 years old. WWI is far removed from the conscious of modern Americans, yet was the pivotal event of the 20th century that affected everything from warfare to art. It is an easy argument that WW2 was simply a continuation of the ripples of WWI as a result of the harsh penalties the allies imposed on Wilhelm II's Germany -- thus what began in the autumn of 1914 resonated well in the late 1940's.
